Good commuting road bike

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 11:54 PM
Hey guys!

I need some advice - I'm looking for a good commuting road bike with a sleek and skinny frame and I'm looking to spend around $600.00. I've looked at Specialized, Gary Fisher and Cannondale (which seems clearly out of my price range) and I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions of other places to look.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for any comments left!

Gage and the ongoing battle to feed him

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 12:28 PM
FINALLY he is eating again, and actually ingesting VEGGIES!!
its been 2weeks of him hardly eating any food (other than froz. waffles and peanut butter and milk)

so 2 weeks ago Gage and I had a tummy bug, but his seem to get a little better than continue on.
The dr seemed to think the bug damaged the stomach lining making lactose too hard for him to digest, so we started him back on pro-biotics and cut the dairy.

and not only has his eating picked up,he just ate a TON of brocoli for lunch in his noodles.
and better yet?!!! He is HAPPIER.
I didnt realize his mood was affected so much.

so there you have it, dairy is the devil.
too bad I love it soo much and thankgod for lactaid milk.

Gettin' Knittin'

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 9:49 AM
I'm from Jacksonville, FL and there is only one specialty knitting store here and it is impossible get through to get any questions answered.

I wanted to buy a small quantity of wool to learn to spin yarn with (my friend made ma drop spindle), and I also am looking to buy superwash undyed yarn (to dye, obviously).

Do any of you have a recommendation of a website I can order it from? I would like to hear from people who have experience buying from a particular site personally (as personal as LJ gets, :] ) instead of just googling it.

I appreciate it in advance!

PS: As much as I can crochet, I CANNOT grasp how to do a round, anyone know of any good sites with tutorials I can understand? I've been trying to figure it out for a few weeks now. Knitting, no problem. Crocheting? Rips my face off and stands on it as it conquers me.

Some finished projects

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 12:35 AM
I finally had some time to sew over the past week or so, after spending more than a week in bed, sick, and then playing "catch up" for a couple of weeks.

Here's what I finished tonight:
A table runner, and my first attempt with this technique. I like it! I think I'll use this technique again. Too bad the colors came out off in this picture.
more pictures! )

It's good to be sewing again.

So I submitted all my grad school applications today and celebrated by BUYING SOCK YARN! i was so excited to finally knit socks from Regia Galaxy that took me about a year to find in stores, and then I couldn't find it in my apartment. But I bought other sock yarn... I'm so excited :)

Fair price for commissioned work?

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 6:09 PM
Hi all!

A coworker has asked me to knit some baby booties and a bonnet for her brother's new arrival (expected in January). She's asked me to think of the price I want for them, and I don't know what figure to give her... Have any of you had experience with this? What do you charge in comparison to what you could buy in a store? Do you include the yarn cost with that?

And, about yarn, if I do decide to do this, I'm not really sure what I should look for in a yarn other than it be machine washable. Is wool still OK for babies? Would acrylic be better? Or cotton? (I'm kind of a snob when it comes to fibers and reeeeeeeeeeeally don't like the feel of acrylic, and kind of dislike the splittiness of most cotton yarns, but if they're better, then I'll go with that). Anything else I should be considering when making something for babies?

Thanks everyone!

Bad Romance

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 12:49 PM
So after mis-singing the Lady Gaga lyrics for two weeks, I got some weird looks and finally had to google . I bet you are much disappointed to learn she is not screaming "Au Jus bad romance!" towards the end there after the French part, because I know I was. Also, because I would argue: Nothing better describes that icky-in-love feeling than if it came with a side of its own sauce
Not as cool as I thought you were, Lady Gaga. Oh well.

Xposted to baby stuff for sale. I just thought it might be more appropriate here.

I have a few items from my baby shower that I do not need to keep.

Also have thank you notes from the Dollar Store

Some blue wire ribbon, and a "spinner" (like on a life game), that says Mom, Dad, Grandma, Nanny, and you spin it. Usually ends up on mom, though ;)

I can put it in a bubble mailer, and it will be sent out for shipping. I am guestimating about $3. Comment here or email caitlin.west@gmail.com

My latest completed project

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 11:28 AM
I made this quilt for my son. I started it when he was a baby, and finished it when he was 7. Oh well, better late than never, I suppose! It's completely hand pieced and hand quilted. The hand quilting alone took about 8 months. I wish I knew some hand quilters - we could have a bee!

It was my first attempt at hand piecing or hand quilting. I decided to hand piece because I would work on it when he was napping and I didn't want the sewing machine to wake him, then once I'd done the whole quilt top by hand I figured I couldn't machine quilt a hand pieced top! Crazy, I know.

I'm really pleased with the way it turned out, especially now that it has been washed a lot (we had lice in the summer and everything got washed and dried on hot many, many times) so it got all wrinkled up and old fashioned looking, which I love.

Excuse the crappy pictures, my PalmPilot camera on my poorly lit dining room table :(

Modular knitting ideas

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 12:14 PM
I wonder if anyone could help me with a modular knitting sort of idea?
I already did a "domino square" project a while back, nice little diamond-shaped pieces which you then attach further pieces onto as you go along (by picking up sts along sides of existing blocks). Quite a simple pattern (garter st with 3 sts worked together in the centre).
I was thinking of making a fun, multicoloured shawl in a similar fashion (diamond-shaped tesselating pieces) - does anyone have any recommendations for other modular patch patterns that also produce a diamind shape? (Slightly lacey might be nice).

I could probably make something up as I go along, but I figured that you guys might be able to point me in the right direction.

thanks!

Question on changing colors in the round.

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 2:21 AM
I'm working on my first top down sweater pattern which is done in the round and I'm wanting to put in stripes. My question is: is changing the colors in the round different than if you're working flat and if so, how do I do it?

Other than patternschool.com does anyone know of any online pattern drafting courses which are available for free? I'm creating a list (note: I already have all of the vintage books available on vintagesewing.org and the archive.org open library search)

Only looking for full courses, not tutorials for individual items
I have a LOT of wool, all never worn, various sizes of Longies, Shorties, Soakers etc here:

http://community.livejournal.com/yarny_bits/215984.html#cutid1
(I am continuing to add to the list of stuff, as I get pictures trimmed and uploaded.)

Everything is 30% off the list prices OR BEST OFFER
(because my husband got laid off, a client skipped out on me and our washing machine broke, all in the same week and now we don't have rent money.)

I AM ALSO OPEN FOR CUSTOM KNITS!

prices & details behind the cut )

You can see the order of knitting slots, shipping info etc at the [info]yarny_bits profile page.

For those of you who knit your own - there is an in-stock yarn post here:

And last but not least there are a bunch of Mei Tais for sale in this post:

FOs - A bit of a variety

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 7:07 PM
I got rather ill this month, so I spent a lot of time on the sofa, knitting while I watched television. As with everything I make, there were no patterns involved for any of these (because I can't read them). They were ALL made up as I went along, so any wonkiness can be attributed to that. Image heavy, because I made a bunch of stuff.

But mostly hats )
